Last time we discussed the different types of sofas. This time we will discuss the different styles and how to recognize them.

Antique Cabriole Sofa in Toile

The Cabriole (ka-BREE-oh-l) has a continuous back and arm. It is often made of a single piece of carved wood. Made popular by Louis XV, this is a classic looking sofa, however, more modern interpretations are currently en vogue due to the curved arms.

Next up is the Camel Back. Another classic, this sofa is one of the easiest to identify. You can still achieve a more contemporary look through fabric choice and simplified lines.

The “Tuxedo” style sofa is one of my favorites. The arms are the same height as the back and can be slightly flared or perfectly square. From modern to traditional, this is always a handsome choice.

A “Lawson” sofa covers a lot of ground. It is the perennial favorite with it’s low arms and loose cushions. This sofa is perfect for napping and lounging about. Grab a book, queue up a movie, or enjoy a tea and intimate conversation with a dear friend; the Lawson is the perfect spot for all of these cozy activites.

Although the final style could fall under Tuxedo due to the height of the arm being the same as the back, the “Chesterfield” is a sofa to know by name. The things that distinguish it, are the rolled arms and all over tufting. They are typically shown in leather and conjure up visions of dark paneled offices with scent the of cigars and bourbon wafting about.
